Malta’s broadcaster TVM announced today that The X Factor is coming to Malta. Next to that, they revealed that the winner of the contest will represent the country in Eurovision Song Contest 2019.
Ever since their debut at Eurovision, Malta has chosen their representative through a national final. Now they are changing things up and the winner of The X Factor will automatically get the right to represent the country in Eurovision. TVM are hoping that the X Factor “takes the local entertainment industry to the next level.”
The show will kick off in October, but it’s still unknown when the final will take place. We still don’t know how the song will be chosen either.
Malta at the Eurovision Song Contest
Malta debuted at the contest in 1971, but only took part three times before 1991. Since then, the country has finished second twice but has never won the contest.
In the recent years Malta has failed to qualify to the final three times, in 2015, 2017 and 2018. Ira Losco took the country to the final in 2016 and finished 12th. This year Christabelle represented the country with the song “Taboo”, but failed to reach the final after finishing 13th in the semifinal.
