A new Eurovision season is fast approaching and countries are beginning to reveal their plans for Israel. Latvia is the latest to confirm that they will participate in 2019.
Participation and Supernova continue
Speaking to fellow fan site Eurovoix, Latvia’s broadcaster (LTV) confirmed their participation to next year’s Eurovision Song Contest. This will be Latvia’s 20th participation at the contest as they participated every year since debuting in 2000. After Estonia, they are they second Baltic country confirming intent to participate in Israel. They will most likely continue to use the popular televised national final Supernova to pick Laura Rizzotto successor.
Eurovision Song Contest 2019
The 2019 edition of the Eurovision Song Contest will take place next May in Israel, following Netta Barzilai’s victory with her catchy entry “Toy“. The host city is currently not known but it should be revealed soon. So far, 20 countries have either confirmed participation or intent to participate.
Latvia in the Eurovision Song Contest
Latvia made its Eurovision debut back in 2000. Their first representative was pop/rock band Brainstorm with the song “My Star“, finishing in an excellent third place with 136 points. Latvia didn’t have to wait too long to score its first victory as they won the contest in 2002 with Marie N and “I wanna”. Since the introduction of the semi-finals, however, Latvia has struggled to achieve good results. In fact, they only managed to reach the top 10 twice (in 2005 and 2015) and missed out on qualifying for the grand final every year from 2009 to 2014 and in 2017 and 2018. In Lisbon, Laura Rizzotto flew the country’s flag at the contest with “Funny girl”. Despite her charismatic performance she placed 12th, just 6 points shy of qualification.
