Junior Eurovision 2020: Our Top 12 (12 to 7)

Welcome to our Junior Eurovision 2020 Top 12! The team here at ESCXTRA have scored all 12 entries ‘Eurovision-style’ and we’ll be counting down our top 12 along with a selection of reviews. Has your favourite made the top spot? Let’s find out!

Last year we revealed our top 10 of the 19 entries at the Junior Eurovision Song Contest 2019. Our favourite entry in 2019 was ‘Bim Bam Toi’ from France’s Carla, followed by ‘Fire’ from North Macedonia’s Mila Moskov and ‘Superhero’ from Poland’s Viki Gabor.

Today we count down 12 to 7, followed by our top 6 later this week!

12 – 🇷🇸 Serbia: Petar Aničić – Heartbeat

Score: 24 points

Conor: 12 points

My personal winner of the year. It is a nice change of pace for Serbia to send a male solo artist for once and Petar is more than up for the job! While a ballad, Heartbeat feels fresh compared to the others due to a lack of long notes (perhaps reflecting the fast beats of a heart?). The English lyrics are incorporated well into the later part of the song, and will hopefully help in non-Serbian speaking viewers to understand and hopefully connect with the song. A top 5 (hopefully even first winner!) result is long overdue for Serbia.

The song starts with a nice piano sound which grabs my attention immediatly. Then Petar starts singing in Serbian, which I think is a beautiful language to sing in! This might not me the most memorable song this year, and I wouldn’t call this the best entry Serbia ever sent. However, I think it is far from boring. One of the better ballads this year. Also, I absolutely adre music videos that are recorded in cities, they always make me curious and wanting to visit the place in real life.

11 – 🇬🇪 Georgia: Sandra Gadelia – You Are Not Alone

Score: 26 points

Tom R: 4 points

In the year of the ballads, we get given… yet another ballad. It’s a tad unfortunate as Georgia always has amazing potential in Junior Eurovision and over the years have brought some absolute ‘bangers’ (see Candy Music, 2011)… however much I usually like ballads, I’m worried this will get lost within the array of ballads we have this year. Which is disappointing. Sandra seems really lovely, and she clearly has vocal potential, I just worry the song isn’t for her. Fingers crossed her recording will allow her to pull it out of the bag and put on display something we didn’t expect. It’s happened in Junior Eurovision before, let’s make it happen again!

Much like in Eurovision itself, Georgia have come to Junior Eurovision 2020 to mix up the musical diveristy. What starts off as a fairly harmless ballad, soon takes on a new life. With a vocal far beyond her years, Sandra punches along with the build of the orchestra to make a lasting impression. This might do a lot better than people think with the right staging. Although in a ballad heavy edition she will face some stiff competition.

10 – 🇺🇦 Ukraine: Oleksandr Balabanov – Vidkryvai (Open Up)

Score: 32 points

Justas: 6 points

This entry is a grower. You might not be a big fan after the first listen, but give it another shot. It is a bit on a deeper and maybe even darker side, especially with that ending of music video, but also you can feel the positivity, the light. I hope Oleksandr can keep up with that voice while singing live, because that vocal line is amazing.

Nathan P: 2 points

Ukraine are known for their polished entries and good production as well as fantastic staging when it comes to both Eurovision and Junior Eurovision. This is no different. However there is a but, this entry just lacks any impact whatsoever. If there were any more entries in this edition I wouldn’t have given it points so me saying that this is in my top 10 isn’t me giving this any kudos seeing as it’s still in my bottom 5 of the contest.

09 – 🇲🇹 Malta: Chanel Monseigneur – Chasing Sunsets

Score: 34 points

Costa: 5 points

I’ve never been one to shy away from a simple power ballad and this is no exception. Although the production isn’t particularly extravagant, the composition is strong and the melody is effective. I’m not sure how competitive this is, but it’s a lovely little song and is firmly on my ballads playlist.

Maria: 1 point

Chasing Sunsets sounds like a nice song with a big potential, however, it’s not catchy enough for me, there’s something missing here. Probably, the tempo change, even though there’s a little raise in the chorus. Chanel’s vocal skills are great but I wish the song didn’t sound quite plain. Still there’s a hope for a promising staging.

08 – 🇷🇺 Russia: Sofia Feskova – My New Day

Score: 36 points

Tom O: 4 points

A very polished entry as you’d expect from Russia. Strong vocals alongside great instrumentation with the strings. I’m also expecting the staging for this to really stand out and impress viewers. The song itself though doesn’t stand out next to some of the more creative and different songs on offer.

Tim: 1 point

My New Day is one of those quirky entries that often gets overlooked. This is song is really nice, and it feels something magical and fairytale like. The only thing I am concerned about is that there are similar entries within the same tone and tempo. However, it is a nice entry, and it is something consistent.

07 – 🇩🇪 Germany: Susan – Stronger With You

Score: 46 points

Nick: 8 points

Germany entering Junior Eurovision… I never thought I’d see the day! But I’m happy it’s finally here. Their song is a solid effort, but one that shows they haven’t really managed to grasp what scores at Junior Eurovision yet. It’s a solid effort, which uses a clever mix of German and English. The singer is very capable, likeable and they’ll do a good job staging this… But for next year… Siegel doesn’t have to be your leading example for everything, okay?

Sean: 2 points

What a year for Germany to debut, eh? I was shocked that this was chosen as the song, when See You Later, the other song choice in the national selection, I thought was leagues better and had far more potential. Susan was my choice for singer, and she’s cery good, but her singing the other song could’ve been a desperately needed pop girlie moment. Stronger With You is benign, bland, and I can’t imagine this making waves at the contest. I hope that Germany continues to compete after this because it’s a delight to hear German at a Eurovision event for once. But this song ain’t it.
