After much speculation from fans, Daði Freyr & Gagnamagnið were chosen to represent Iceland in Eurovision 2021 in October. Iceland’s 2020 Eurovision entry “Think About Things” became a viral hit and was speculated to win the contest as a whole. Now, after a very long wait, we are finally able to hear the new entry “10 Years”!
They are one of the last to release their song this year, and have already promised fans an interesting dance routine, and the iconic outfits that we remember from last year- with an upgrade, though! Check out the video here:
While “Think About Things” was about his daughter, Daði Freyr has shared that “10 Years” is about his wife Árný Fjóla, who is also part of the band Gagnamagnið.
The selection process
While many countries had already confirmed (or denied) that their 2020 artists would return, Iceland build up the tension up until October. Iceland’s broadcaster RÚV has hosted national final Söngvakeppnin for many years now, but in the end decided upon internal selection for 2021. In RÚV’s documentary about Daði & Gagnamagnið’s journey towards Eurovision, it is stated that:
“We knew we could never hold a big competition, given the circumstances. We therefore invited Daði to take part again. “Think About Things” was such a huge hit that we’ve never seen anything like it […]. Not just that, but Daði is also a great guy, a kind fellow. And Gagnamagnið, all decent people. We’re really pleased with this decision.”
