With the deadline to submit the songs for the 2021 Eurovision Song Contest imminent, Azerbaijan’s Eurovision 2021 representative Efendi has finally released her entry for this year’s contest, titled “Mata Hari”. Azerbaijan is one of the last countries to reveal its entry for this year’s contest. Mata Hari was written and produced by Amy van der Wel, Luuk van Beers, Tony Cornelissen and Josh Earl.

Speaking to Eurovision.tv, Efendi tells more on what Mata Hari is about.
“It is very important to talk about strong women in order to remind our beautiful ladies that despite the fact that we still live in a world full of prejudices, a woman can do anything and female power cannot be compared with anything. And if suddenly you do not have enough inspiration now, let the stories of strong women in history become the source of that very charge of energy with which you can cope with everything and achieve even bigger success. There is a queen in each of us and I want to remind you that it’s time to release her”.
Team Azerbaijan mentions that “Mata Hari” focuses on female empowerment:
“The song is about the power of women, who captivate you with their poise, who surprise you with their endless strength, and who move you in mysterious ways. Women in society are habitually associated with tenderness, care and weakness, but for some of them, life has prepared cruel lessons that not every man can handle.”
About Efendi
Samira Efendiyeva gained popularity in Azerbaijan through a range of singing competitions and festivals. Her credits include Yeni Ulduz (2009), Böyük Səhnə (2014) and The Voice of Azerbaijan (2015), where she finished third place. She also placed third in Silk Way Star back in 2017, and returned to Kazakhstan in 2019 for the Voice of Nur-Sultan festival.
She was internally-selected by iTV to represent Azerbaijan last year with “Cleopatra”. Following the cancellation, but Azerbaijan chose to select her again for the 2021 contest. Efendi will be competing for a spot in the final at the first semi-final on May 18, 2021.
