Rehearsal review

Rehearsing today for Ireland inside La Seine Musicale is Maiú Levi Lawlor, performing “Saor (Disappear)”. As the first rehearsals are closed to the press, this review is based upon content made public by the EBU and France Télévisions.

Maiú is alone on stage for his performance, but the heavy use of the LED backdrop and floor certainly ensure the stage is filled to the brim. The young Irish singer is dressed in a casual style, with an off-white t-shirt and trousers and a black jacket.

This is the first rehearsal in which we begin to see the extent of the stage capabilities in La Seine Musicale as Ireland uses the LEDs to display a road on the floor and various landscapes of houses in the background. It’s a very clever effect to use both the backdrop and floor in sync to transport us into a different, realistic setting. We also see several splashes of colour in the backdrop which gives the performance a wonderful youthful feeling.

Maiú was considered a surprise winner of the Irish national selection after only just progressing through the earlier rounds, however this performance makes it seem like he was destined to head to Paris all along as he certainly owns the Paris stage. He seems at home with this rock-influenced song and is Ireland’s first foray into the genre since their Junior Eurovision debut in 2015.
