XTRA Rehearsals — Second rehearsals for Australia, Montenegro, Ireland, and Latvia

Today was the second day of second rehearsals in Basel, with nine of the sixteen second semi-finalists rehearsing during shorter slots of 20m. The Eurovision social accounts have been publishing the traditional second rehearsal videos, which are short extracts of the TV feed from each performance. The Eurovision website has also released new pictures for each rehearsal.

Below, you can find all the videos in the larger Youtube format (unlisted but made available by the Eurovision app), as well as the new details they and the photos might reveal, and links to the notes taken from the first rehearsal of each country. We cover the songs in slots #1 to #4 in the running order, and will later publish the same info for songs #5 to #9 (and tomorrow, the remaining songs of the second semi-final).

You can find our reviews of the first semi-finalists below:

The footage gives us a few new details. It confirms the use of graphics on the TV stream, to push the whole “infomercial” atmosphere of the performance. It also shows that the giant blender in the middle of the stage can be entered, as Go-Jo gets inside and disappears in a puff of smoke, before exiting with a new outfit, taking off his white costume to reveal a blue one, less skin-covering.

The pictures do not reveal anything new, but they do confirm that there will be (at least) three stages to Go-Jo’s outfit: the white outfit, the blue outfit, and the topless outfit.

The videoclip gives us a better understanding of the “circle” behind Nina. It’s not as circular or as flat as Vladana’s in Turin, it looks more like a giant cushion or comforter, curving a bit forward: Nina could basically sleep on it.

The footage also shows a beautiful LED graphic of a symbol of justice: a balance and a sword, fused together, which falls down on the back screen, under the floor, after which a wave of white light follows the same movement to fill up the floor, as Nina walks to the frame stage.

The pictures also shows that Nina let her “cushion” fall down and leaves it on the floor at some point during the performance.

The video does not tell us much more compared to what we already knew, although it gives a better understanding of what the “helmet-looking” hood is. It does have a sci-fi look (think of the “hood” behind he head of Judoons in Doctor Who, or Krogans in Mass Effect).

As for the pictures, one of them seems to show that the circular pattern of spotlights behind Erlend can actually change shape and turn into a heart by the end of the performance.

Nothing new under the sun here either, with the performance looking very much like the one from Supernova, with the changed outfit. They do look slicker and “wetter”, especially with the hair-turned-into-roots concept. This make the band members look very much like the nymphs of ancient times.

The pictures show that the atmosphere and colours change throughout the song, and confirm the return of a “rain effect” at some point.

We will come back with more information on the next five contestants of the second semi-final, so stay tuned on ESCXTRA! And don’t forget, we will be on the ground, starting on May 10, to bring you all the latest from Basel, including the Turquoise Carpet, the dress rehearsal, and more.
