Carlos Higes to ‘Spin The Magic’ for Spain

For the first time since 2006, RTVE held an open casting call for potential Junior Eurovision candidates. Over the European Summer, a total of 95 applicants were reviewed before the remaining 10 attended the Prado del Rey studios for the final auditions. During the final round, the children were able to cover two songs – one of their own choice and another that had either represented Spain in Eurovision or Junior Eurovision.

This week RTVE confirmed Carlos Higes will represent the Spanish nation in Yerevan, Armenia. For his audition he performed Xeinn’s Benidorm Fest 2022 entry, ‘Eco’ and ‘Tacones Rojo’ by his favourite singer, Sebastián Yatra. The 11-year-old from Valencia is a singer, model, pianist and futsal fanatic, with a proficiency for languages. As well as this, he has singing competition experience having participated in La Voz and Idol Kids. He has also been a fan of Eurovision since 2016.

I would like to sing a catchy song that gets into your head and you don’t stop dancing to it, because I love dancing.

Spain in the Junior Eurovision Song Contest

Back in 2003 Spain made their Junior Eurovision debut in the inaugural contest held in Copenhagen, with Sergio and his entry ‘Desde el cielo’. During the final, they placed second with 125 points. It soon became clear Spain would be a force to be reckoned with in the Junior Contest. The following year, Spain achieved their only victory to date. Maria Isabel and the lively, ‘Antes muerta que sencilla‘ won in 2004 with 171. Despite their early run of success, Spain took a break from the contest after 2006, before making a comeback in 2019 and picking up where they left off, with two back to back podium finishes.

Last year the broadcaster selected Levi Díaz with ‘Reir for the Paris final. During the contest they placed 15th overall with 77 points. To date this is their lowest finishing position, having never previously placed outside the top 4.
