Eurovision 2022 stage construction begins

Designer Francesca Montinaro has shared further details of the inspiration behind her concept.

Last month, Rai – the host broadcaster for the 2022 Eurovision Song Contest – unveiled the stage design for Turin’s PalaOlimpico. Designed by Francesca Montinaro, the concept is called The Sun Within. This week, the construction of the stage begins.

As reported by Eurovision IN, the construction of the stage began yesterday (March 15). Rai previously teased that the stage will be both classic and modern at the same time, blending the digital with the analogue, demonstrating a range of light and movement.

In an interview with ANSA, designer Francesca Montinaro has shared further details of the inspiration behind the concept, of which Italy’s nature plays a central role.

There is intentionality behind every aspect of the stage design. The stage will be flat, in order to remain neutral for the performers to express their identity upon.

The Green Room has been designed to incorporates the feel of baroque gardens, such as those at Villa dโ€™Este, Castel Gandolfo and Villa Lante, with the water features evoking fountains.

Eurovision 2022 so far

A total seventeen Italian cities submitted their candidacy to host the Eurovision Song Contest 2022

After a lengthy bidding process, Rai announced that The Grand Final will be held in Turinโ€™s PalaOlimpico on Saturday 14 May with Semi-Finals on 10 and 12 May, with Eurovillage set to be located at Piazza San Carlo.

In February, it was announced that the 2022 contest will be hosted by Laura Pausini, Alessandro Cattelan and Mika. Also last month, filming of the podcasts began in Perugia, and has continued in Umbria, Merano, Cortina dโ€™Ampezzo, Naples, Venice and Lazio.

As it stands, Rai hoping for at least 65% audience capacity for Eurovision 2022, but are aiming for as large an audience as possible in the venue.
