Rehearsal review

Stage presentation

Maro is located on the B-stage, not the big one in the middle. It gives the performance a more intimate feeling, though it might even seem a bit small with the number of people on stage. Just like in the national final, her backup singers are a big part of the performance, standing next to her. Instead of the chairs, they are standing up, to show off Maro’s lovely outfit.

The opening shot turns during the instrumental until it settles on Maro when she starts singing. When the chorus starts, the backdrop shows ‘saudade, saudade’ and the lights turn blue/green. This stays throughout the performance as the camera switches between closer shots of Maro and wider shots that show her backup singers.

Costumes and styling

We are big fans of her outfit! The purple looks lovely and fits the theme of the song really well.

Vocal quality

Very impressive, she can create the feeling that you are really part of the performance. It pulls you in and makes you feel happy. As in the studio version, it’s sweet and kind, as well as a little mysterious.

Overall impression

It feels like being at an intimate performance despite being in a big arena. Performing on the B-stage is an interesting choice, we are not sure if it works in their favour yet. It doesn’t bring many surprises, which might disadvantage Portugal, but the feeling it creates compensates for that. From the outfits to the vocals to the light, it leaves a nice feeling once it ends, and you kind of want to hear it again. Juries will definitely go for this, but there’s the question of whether it captures the viewers at home too.
