Ireland’s Eurosong to be held on February 7

Irish Eurovision podcast Éirevision has revealed in their December 31st episode that the Irish national selection for Eurovision 2025 will take place on February 7. Once again, The Late Late Show will host the selection.

The 11th Late Late Show Eurosong selection

This year, Eurosong (not to be mixed up with Belgium’s Eurosong, on February 1) will take place during February 7th’s Late Late Show, and will feature six candidate entries, competing to gain the Irish spot in Basel, in May.

The Late Late Show, hosted by Patrick Kielty since 2023, has been used as the “hosting” show for Ireland’s national selections since 2009. Opting for internal selections after 2015, Irish broadcaster RTÉ came back to the format for Eurovision 2022, and has stayed true to it ever since. This make it one of the rare national final not to take place on a Saturday, since “The Late Late” is broadcast on Fridays.

The first results of the return to a national selection were poor for Ireland, with two non-qualifications, before the victory of Bambie Thug in Eurosong 2024, last year. With “Doomsday Blues”, they managed not only to qualify but also finished 6th in the Grand Final, with what was one of the most impressive performance in Malmö. This was Ireland’s best result in the 21st century.

Can Ireland build on their momentum to break into the Top 5, for the first time since 1997? Should the selection be held as its own show, or is The Late Late Show the best format to gain domestic engagement? Tell us what you think in the comments below, or on social media at @escxtra!
