XTRA REHEARSALS โ€” ๐Ÿ‡ฉ๐Ÿ‡ช Back to the 80’s with Abor & Tynna

Eurovision is here! All the delegations are in Basel and most of the semi-finalists have completed their two rehearsals. The automatic qualifiers, however, have not. Their first rehearsals came yesterday, and we will cover them today, now that we have the pictures from these rehearsals. We start with Germany, the first rehearsal of the day, with “Baller”.

The following pictures have been published by the official Eurovision accounts. (Source: Alma Bengtsson, Corinne Cumming / EBU)

What happened on stage?

This description is sourced from indications given by the official Eurovision Reddit account.

  • Tyna wears a soldier-like outfit: black hotpants, military boots, but a black crop top and leather gloves.
  • The performance starts with Abor playing the entro of the song with a white electric cello, lit-up with LEDs.
  • He sits in front of a tall curtain that goes up to the ceiling and that drops to reveal Tynna, standing on a giant transparent “stereo boombox” prop, that can be split in three
    • She is accompanied by four dancers who wait for her on the floor, as she walks down after the first chorus, and who light her up with handheld spotlights
    • She ends up dancing on the walkway for the final section, with Abor playing on top of the boombox prop
  • The LED screens add graphics that lean into an rough industrial vibe, with “pulsing whites and blue strobes”, as well as a flashing “BALLER” message.
  • The cello is not destroyed at the end, but apparently the boombox explodes? We assume it just produces a lot of fire and smoke.
  • In terms of pyrotechnics, there is the exploding boombox but also a firework finish.

The stage director for this performance is Marvin Dietmann, working with Black Skull. Dietmann has worked on many Eurovision performances in the past, including “Rise Like A Phoenix” and “Space Man”. This year, he’s also working with the Irish and Australian delegations.

Stay tuned for further coverage today, with the rehearsals of yesterday from the automatic qualifiers, and the second rehearsals of the last semi-finalists. And stay tuned for our live coverage on the ground starting on May 10, which will include (among other things) the full dress rehearsals and the live shows, live from Basel!
