Eurovision 2026 participation deadline extended to mid-December

The European Broadcasting Union (EBU) have announced that the deadline for broadcasters to withdraw their participation in the Eurovision Song Contest 2026 without financial penalty has been extended until mid-December.

No financial penalty due to deadline extension

During an EBU Reference Group meeting, the EBU amended the rules to allow a deadline extension for broadcasters to withdraw their Eurovision 2026 participation. Originally broadcasters were given until October 13 to withdraw without a financial penalty for doing so. Now fellow Eurovision fansite ESCToday has revealed this deadline has been extended until mid-December.

In a statement, Director of Eurovision Martin Green MBE revealed the reasoning for the decision. Stating that it has no bearing on the planning process for Vienna’s upcoming hosting and that it is part of the consultation process ongoing with the broadcasters regarding participation at the Eurovision Song Contest 2026.

“As previously announced in July, we are currently undertaking a wide-ranging consultation with our Member broadcasters around participation in the Eurovision Song Contest.

While this is ongoing, we want to provide broadcasters with additional flexibility and clarity in finalizing their application to take part in next year’s event.

To facilitate this, the Eurovision Song Contest Reference Group, the event’s governing body, has agreed to offer broadcasters the option to confirm their participation at the latest by mid-December.

This is simply a procedural matter and has no effect on the overall planning for the 70th Eurovision Song Contest in Vienna next May.”

The full list of participants is expected to be released in late-December. Eurovision 2026 will take place in Vienna, Austria next May with two Semi-Finals on May 12 and 14. The Grand Final will be held on May 16.
