Supernova 2026 format

Early next year the 24 acts will compete in an expanded edition of Supernova 2026. The acts will be split into two groups of twelve in the Semi-Final phase. The live Semi-Finals are scheduled for January 31 and February 7. From each Semi-Final, five acts will advance to the Grand Final. Additionally, a wild card may also be advanced. Thus, as many as 11 acts may feature in the Supernova 2026 Grand Final. The winner that will be chosen on February 14, will represent Latvia at the Eurovision Song Contest 2026 taking place in Vienna, Austria next May.

Latvia in the Eurovision Song Contest

Since obtaining independence, Latvia has featured in the Eurovision Song Contest a total of 25 times. The Baltic nation debuted in the 2000 contest where they placed third with ‘My Star’ by the band Brainstorm. They quickly followed up this impressive start with their first and to date, only win in 2002 with Marie N’s, ‘I Wanna’.

However, what followed was a rocky path for the Latvian eurofans. Their taste for the quirky and alternative of the music scene, failed to appeal to the wider Eurovision audience. With two non-qualification streaks lasting six contests each. Overall Latvia has made the Grand Final on 12 occasions. Featuring in the top 10 in only four contests.

Earlier this year, it was the turn of folk group, Tautumeitas to fly the Latvian flag in Basel. During the Grand Final, the all-female collective and their entry, ‘Bur man laimi’ finished 13th place with 158 points. Bringing a lot of happiness with the highest placement for Latvia since Aminata achieved sixth in 2015.
