XTRA REHEARSALS — 🇵🇱 Light and shadows from ALICJA

Eurovision is back! Delegations have landed/arrived in Vienna these last few days and rehearsals started last Saturday. Just like last year, for the first rehearsal, the EBU releases information on the day of each reharsal, with a sets of three photographs publishe the day after. As such, today, we cover yesterday’s rehearsals, from the second half of the first semi-final (automatic qualifiers excluded). Second to last in the semi-final is Poland, with “Pray”

The following pictures have been published by the official Eurovision accounts.

What happened on stage?

This description is sourced from indications given by the official Eurovision Reddit account.

  • ALICJA keeps her outfit from the national selection, while her dancers wear high-waisted black trousers with white shirts and a cummerbund (waist belt) between them.
  • The performance uses a prop which looks like a tilded plane (giving some Armenia 2023 vibes from the pictures we have), with which ALICJA and her four dancers interact. These interactions were described as “very special” by the official Eurovision account: what we can see so far is a use of light and shadows.
    • The first picture also shows ALICJA and her dancers standing on the plane, which seems to be less tilted than in the third picture: the prop will likely change its angle during the performance.
    • The same first picture also shows them bending their body slightly: there could be some camera work involved to create illusions regarding gravity, but this is only speculation on our part.
  • It seems that overall the performance will rely a lot on plays with light and shadows, with the second picture also showing an impressive set of spotlights (more than 50).

A first impression from these elements makes us think that this could be a nice crossover between the stagings of Armenia 2023 and Portugal 2024, although we still have to watch a press rehearsal to give a full opinion and especially to see what makes it its own thing too. The stage director for this performance is Kamil Staszczyszyn.

Here’s the small message ALICJA had for the Eurovision fans after her rehearsal:

Stay tuned for further coverage tomorrow, with the rehearsals of today, and for our live coverage on the ground starting on May 9, which will include (among other things) the full dress rehearsals and the live shows, live from Vienna!
