Copyright infringement leads to national final withdrawal

Ukraine’s line-up of competitors for its Junior Eurovision ticket was announced recently, with the national final due to take place next Saturday, 22 August. However, the national selection committee detected some irregularities with one of the song, which has led to 15 songs becoming 14.
The song ‘TGIF (Thank God it’s Friday)’ by Alina Valuiska fell foul of the Junior Eurovision rule that states:

…the compositions (lyrics and music) must not have been commercially released and made available to the public before 1 May 2015, and a child is the only rights-holder or co-owner of the rights of the song.

It was discovered that the song is not an original composition, as the music was already that of ‘So Bright’ by Pretty Lights featuring Eligh. Pretty Lights is listed as a co-writer of ‘TGIF’ along with Anna Vakha, but Ukrainian broadcaster NTU never received the required documents.

We have received neither the official confirmation that Alina Vluiska was involved in the process of writing the song, nor the documents for rights transfer from the authors Pretty Lights. Taking into consideration the fact of rules violation, Alina Valuiska is not allowed to compete in the final of the National Selection for JESC-2015.

The national final will go ahead as planned on Saturday 22 August with the remaining 14 entries, which are as follows:

  • Hanna Katrina – Fly
  • Sofia Yaremova – Salsa
  • Fresh – Zhyvy Na Povnu
  • Nazar Stinyanskyy – Come-on
  • Alisa Panchuk – Spivay
