Tonight, RAI held their first national final for the Junior Eurovision Song Contest. After three rounds, it was decided by a combination of televoting and a professional jury that Chiara & Martina Scarpari would sing for Italy in Sofia.
The Three hour selection was a special edition of popular show ‘Ti lascio una canzone’ and began with the first round, which saw the 10 contestants placed in duels against each other. The five winners progressed to the second round.
The Second round saw the five finalists plus a wildcard perform a medley of Italy’s past Eurovision entries – Marco Mengoni’s ‘L’Essenziale’ from 2013, Umberto Tozzi & Rafs ‘Gente di Mare’ from 1987 & the ever popular ‘Nel blue dipinto di blu’ by Domenico Modugno from 1958. A mixture of jury and televoting narrowed the five down to the final two.
In the final round, Chiara & Martina were joined by Giovanni Sutera Sardo. After 10 minutes of voting and some suspense, “Chiara & Martina” were announced as the winners, winning with 60% of the vote.
Although Italy’s representatives are now known, they are yet to reveal the song which will be performed in Sofia.
