Yesterday we celebrated two Eurovision birthday girls; Ester and Monika! Today, however, we only have one Eurovision birthday boy. He’s not “only” anything, though, as he is a Eurovision winner! We give you Eldar Gasimov!
Eldar Gasimov, 29
Eldar Gasimov represented Azerbaijan at the 2011 Eurovision Song Contest in Düsseldorf. As part of the duo Ell & Nikki, alongside Nigar Jamal, he performed the song “Running Scared” in the first semi-final. They finished second, thus sailing into the grand final. There, they managed to score 32 points more than Italy, thereby securing the first win for their country.
Prior to representing his country at Eurovision, Eldar Gasimov participated in Milli Seçim Turu 2011. This was the hunt for that year’s Azeri Eurovision representative. It was one of the longest national pre-selections we have seen, starting off with a staggering 77 singers. 11 singers competed each week, with four shows per week, seeing the artist singing a foreign song, an Azerbaijani song, a Eurovision song and a song of their own choice. The winner of each week proceeded to the final. Neither Eldar nor Nigar won their heat, and should therefore not have been in the final at all. However, they were both given wildcards from the jury, and during the final show, the jury decided that the two of them would defend the Azeri colors in Germany.
Eldar was also one of the hosts of the 2012 contest in Baku.
All of us here at escXtra wish Eldar the very happiest of birthdays!
