An Xtra Happy Birthday; 27 July!

Greetings to Iceland, France, Italy and Andorra!

Four Eurovision birthdays to celebrate today, one of whom is a winner! So, we have two birthday girls and two birthday boys. One winner, two top 10 results, one non qualifier and one last place. Multiple languages are represented; one sings in English, one in English and Catalan, one in Neapolitan and one in French. The youngest is born in the 70s, the oldest in the 1930s; we give you Isabelle Aubret!

Isabelle Aubret, 80

Isabelle Aubret represented France both at the 1962 and the 1968 Eurovision Song Contests. In Luxembourg City in 1962 she won the contest by performing “Un premier amour”, thus securing a third French victory in five years. Six years later, in London, she finished third with “La source“. In addition to her two Eurovision participations, she also took part in the French pre-selections in 1961, 1970, 1976 and 1983.

Peppino di Capri, 79

Peppino represented Italy at the 1991 Eurovision Song Contest on home ground in Rome. His entry, “Comme è ddoce ‘o mare”, was performed in the minority language Neapolitan. He received a total of 89 points, thus finishing in a very respectable seventh place.

Kristján Gislason, 49

Kristján Gislason represented Iceland at the 2001 Eurovision Song Contest in Copenhagen. He was part of the duo Two Tricky alongside Gunnar Ólason. They performed the song “Angel”, which was one of the pre-contest fan favorites. At the contest, however, it didn’t really do too well. It recieved only 3 point, thus sharing last place with neighbours Norway. Kristján also did backing vocals for Hera Björk in 2010 and for Eyþór Ingi in 2013.

Susanne Georgi, 42

Susanne, originally from Denmark, represented Andorra at the 2009 Eurovision Song Contest in Moscow. She performed the song “La teva decisió (Get a Life)”, partly in Catalan, partly in English. Unfortunately she failed to qualify for the final, as she finished 15th in her semi-final. This was the last time, for now, that Andorra participated in the contest.

All of us here at escXtra wish Isabelle, Peppino, Kristján and Susanne the very happiest of birthdays!
