The song submission process for Melodifestivalen 2021 is about to open, and several former participants have reportedly been in the studio.
Former participating artists trying their luck again?
Scandipop revealed a list of Swedish artists who have been in the studio as the Melodifestivalen 2021 song submission opening approaches. The submissions will open on August 24th, as ESCXTRA has previously reported.
Four of these artists participated in this year’s Melodifestivalen. Fan favorite Dotter finished in second place with “Bulletproof”, only one point behind The Mamas. Paul Rey also made the final, while Klara Hammarström and Faith Kakembo ended 5th in their respective heats.
Furthermore, Liamoo (Melodifestivalen 2018 and 2019) and Rebecka Karlsson (Melodifestivalen 2019) also appear on the list.
Changes to Melodifestivalen 2021?
Whether we’ll see any of these artists return to Melodifestivalen next year remains to be seen. However, the fate of another aspect of the contest is apparently up in the air. ESCXTRA previously wrote about a possible change to the multi-city tour format in light of the pandemic. You can read the article here.
So far, SVT have declined to make a formal announcement regarding the plans. Undoubtedly, we should be getting news in the next few months.
Sweden in the Eurovision Song Contest
Sweden made their Eurovision debut in 1958. ABBA became their first winner with “Waterloo”, which was later voted the best Eurovision song during the 50 year anniversary event in 2005.
They’ve since racked up an additional five victories, making it six total. This only puts them behind Ireland for total wins and makes them one of the most successful countries in Eurovision history.
The Mamas won Melodifestivalen 2020 with “Move” and were meant to represent the country in Rotterdam before the contest was canceled.
