The Netherlands’ streaming platform Videoland has recently announced its very own version of RuPaul’s Drag Race. For those who are not familiar with the show, it is a talent competition specifically for drag queens. This makes it one of the first spinoffs of the popular show outside of English speaking countries. Even better: Eurovision fans are sure to see some familiar faces, including 1993’s Ruth Jacott!
From hosting to judging
The format is similar to any talent competition. There is a panel of judges who decide which Drag Queen gets to stay for another round. The regular judges consist of host Fred van Leer, fashion designer Nikkie Plessen. They are joined by rotating judges, including famous Dutch singers, comedians, actors and more!
Each week the jury will be joined by a special guest member, which is where it gets interesting for Eurovision fans. They can firstly look forward to seeing the online host of the contest, NikkieTutorials, real name Nikkie de Jager. The beauty guru with over 13 million subscribers on YouTube was set to do the online hosting for the 2020 contest in Rotterdam, and ended up doing video calls with all the contestants.
Joining the group of guest judges is another familiar Eurovision name: singer Edsilia Rombley. Edsilia represented The Netherlands in 1998 with ‘Hemel en Aarde’ and again in 2007 with ‘On Top Of The World’. Like Nikkie, she was chosen as one of the hosts of the 2020 Eurovision Song Contest.
Thankfully, the EBU announced that the hosts for the contest will remain the same. We will get to see Nikkie and Edsilia shine in Rotterdam next year!
