It has been three days since the sisters Sigga, Beta and Elín won the Icelandic ticket to Turin with “Með hækkandi sól”. This morning RÚV released the full results of both the jury and the televote of Söngvakeppnin 2022. The numbers show that the sisters beat Reykjavíkurdætur by just over 8000 votes over two rounds of voting.

The Söngvakeppnin final goes over two rounds. The result of the first round, where all five finalists perform their songs, is decided by 50/50 jury and televote. The top two acts then go head to head in the duel. In the duel there is no jury; it is decided by 100% televote. Or is it really? The votes from the first round are added to the televote in the duel, so the jury still has a bit of a say in the final result as well.
The numbers show that Reykjavíkurdætur won both the televote and the jury vote in the first round.

The televote in the duel gave a completely different result, as Sigga, Beta og Elín received almost 12000 votes more than Reykjavíkurdætur.

Did all the televotes register?
Starting literally the moment the hosts announced the winner, there has been a lot of talk on social media. “Everybody” assumed that Reykjavíkurdætur would win , even Sigga, Beta and Elín, so emotions ran high, especially among fans of the daughters. A lot of people have claimed they tried to vote for Reykjavíkurdætur, but that their calls/sms didn’t register. However, also people who tried to vote for the sisters claim to have experienced the same thing.
Fréttablaðið reported that RÚV has investigated these claims, and the conclusion is that nothing wrong has happened. Rúnar Freyr Gíslason, the project manager at RÚV confirms that they have been in touch with Vodafone, who is in charge of the voting. They kept a close eye on the voting as it happened on Saturday, and they also double checked all the numbers and systems on Sunday. According to their findings, 99,6% of the calls went through. Also, the 0,4% calls that didn´t go through were for different songs, not just for Reykjavíkurdætur.
So all in all it seems we can trust that the right song won, based on the current voting format. Some people are encouraging RÚV to consider making changes, both to the format of Söngvakeppnin and the voting. We’ll just have to wait and see whether or not canges will happen.

Sigga, Beta og Elín will compete in the first semi final on 10 May. They will perform “Með hækkandi sól” in the second half of their semi.
