Rotterdam 2021

🇳🇱 Virtual Eurovision Village unveiled

The platform launches worldwide on May 15

Last month, the city of Rotterdam has decided to cancel plans for an in-person Eurovision Village due to the ongoing pandemic. As a replacement, a virtual alternative was announced. Today, teaser images of the virtual Eurovision Village have been revealed. The platform will be open between the 15th and 23rd of May.

Last month, a Rotterdam city council meeting determined that the planned Eurovision Village at the Binnenrotte will not go ahead. Originally, this was intended to be a Fieldlab event, to be used as part of the Netherlands’ re-opening strategy. While the contest itself is still expected to have a small audience as part of a large event test, this was ultimately not agreed upon for Eurovision Village.

Organisers will offer a “high-quality, virtual and interactive 3D world” that will ‘open up’ the city of Rotterdam to visitors from across the globe. The municipality hopes for 1 million virtual visitors for the online platform.

Now, images of the virtual village have been unveiled on Eurovision.tv. The Online Eurovision Village will be available 24/7 and free of charge at: www.eurovisionvillage.com.

About the 2021 Eurovision Village

The virtual village has been designed, built and filled with incredible digital content by Rotterdam Festivals, entertainment agency Tribe Company and DEPT digital agency. Featuring iconic landmarks from across the city, The Eurovision Village is the official fan zone for this event. The site promises that “a wide range of musicians and artists – including 2021 participants – will perform” on the platform.

We’re really excited that the City of Rotterdam is breaking new ground this year with the creation of a virtual Eurovision Village. Opening up this online space means Eurovision fans from across the world can all be in Rotterdam to share the fun and excitement as we bring the Eurovision Song Contest back. The village is a tribute to the creativity of the Host City and their motto ‘Make It Happen’. We might not be able to gather in person the way we are used to this year but the innovation shown by the City of Rotterdam means that we can unite even more people with music and entertainment in the true spirit of the Eurovision Song Contest.

Martin Österdahl, Eurovision Song Contest Executive Supervisor

From 15 – 23 May 2021 the doors of the Online Eurovision Village will open up to visitors from around the world. Fans will be able immerse themselves in the world of Eurovision and enjoy live concerts by artists such as Johnny Logan and DJ Afrojack from the comfort of their homes.
