🇮🇪 Ireland: Camera breaking prior to performance was the cause of delay

In the first Eurovision Semi Final last night, Ireland’s performance was delayed, prior to Lesley Roy’s performance. Sietse Bakker, Executive Producer, has now revealed that the delay was due to a camera breaking.

The contest experienced a short delay prior to the performance of the 7th entry, Ireland’s Lesley Roy, due to perform “Maps”. Presenter Chantal Janzen was forced to fill time for a few minutes for the longer than normal planned break.

Speaking to Op1, Sietse Bakker confirmed that a camera broke just before the Irish performance, forcing Janzen to improvise live on the Eurovision stage, and delaying the performance of the Irish entry by a short while.

After a few minutes, the camera was fixed, and Lesley Roy came out to perform “Maps” as planned. Her performance featured a number of stage props and multiple camera angles.

“Maps”

Ireland did not progress through the semi-finals after Lesley Roy’s performance. Along with Slovenia, Australia, North Macedonia, Croatia and Romania, “Maps” was one of the six songs that did not score highly enough to be in the semi-final’s top 10.

The qualifiers from last night’s semi-final top 10 were:

  • Norway: TIX – Fallen Angel
  • Israel: Eden Alene – Set Me Free
  • Russia: Manizha – Russian Woman
  • Azerbaijan: Efendi – Mata Hari
  • Malta: Destiny – Je me casse
  • Lithuania: The Roop – Discoteque
  • Cyprus: Elena Tsagrinou – El Diablo
  • Sweden: Tusse – Voices
  • Belgium: Hooverphonic – The Wrong Place
  • Ukraine: GO_A – Shum

Ireland at the Eurovision Song Contest

Ireland have participated at Eurovision 54 times since first performing in 1965. They are the nation in the contest with the most wins, currently standing at seven. Their most recent top 10 finish was in 2011, when Jedward performed “Lipstick” in Dusseldorf. RTÉ selected Lesley Roy as the Irish act in 2020 with the song “Story Of My Life”. After the 2020 contest was cancelled, RTÉ internally selected Roy to represent them in Eurovision 2021 with “Maps”.
