At the end of August, Latvian broadcaster LTV confirmed their participation for Eurovision 2022. After a hiatus last year, the broadcaster is set to revert back to the Supernova format following the internal-selection of Samanta Tina.
Today, LTV have opened the submissions window for Supernova 2022. Singers and songwriters aged 16 and over can compete in Supernova. According to the rules, foreign songwriters also able to compete if they contribute one-third or less of the song.
The song submissions window will close December 7. A jury formed of representatives of the main radio stations in Latvia will then assess the songs in a blind process (the artist will not be given). Between 16 and 24 acts will be selected by the jury to part in the selection.
Latvia at Eurovision 2021
Samanta Tina, a veteran of Supernova, finally got her chance to go to Eurovision last year when she won the selection with “Still Breathing”. However, with the cancellation of the contest, it turned out to not be her year after all. Thankfully, LTV internally selected her for the 2021 contest and began the search for her 2021 entry last summer.
Samanta and her team wrote 11 potential entries during her songwriting camp. In the process she consulted former Latvian Eurovision representatives Aminata (2015) and Kārlis Būmeistars (Valters & Kaža, 2005).” She released her Eurovision 2021 entry “The Moon Is Rising” back in March, as part of a series of special programming from LTV. The video went on to attract controversy from conservatives in Latvia.
Unfortunately, the song failed to qualify from its semi-final in Rotterdam, placing 17th with 14 points.
