Rehearsal review

Stage presentation

There is a whole sea of blue behind Mia and her three contemporary dancers. Mia starts alone on stage but by the end of the first chorus, works with the three dancers to tell the story of “Guilty Pleasure”. The screens also show a nighttime woodland on the screens towards the end. The camera follows Mia a lot around, and there could be some tweaks to following her back for too long in some sections. However, this does allow the storytelling to be really effective.

The bridge and final chorus were in Croatian, providing a very nice blend of the two overall.

Costumes and styling

Mia is dressed in a hot pink flamenco-inspired dress. Her backing dancers are dressed in loose-fitting beige outfits.

Vocal quality

Once the in-ears were fixed – nothing Mia’s fault! – we were treated to some very lovely vocals throughout the rehearsal and she’s clearly very confident at telling this story.

Overall impression

Permission has been granted to give us some Croatian lyrics and this really is effective to lift the final minute, keeping it fresh. Overall, we really like the storytelling here but are intrigued to see how it looks directly next to Portugal before we can make our minds up fully.
