Eurovision stars nominated for Greek MAD VMAs

The nominees of the annual MAD VMAs have been announced. Next month, the show will take place in Greece and many of the nominees are familiar faces to Eurovision fans. Helena Paparizou and Eleni Foureira have both bagged multiple nominations.

Eurovision stars headline “Best Female” categories

Two former Eurovision stars have made it into the five nominees for Best Female Artist ‘Adult’. Among these, we see 2005 Eurovision winner Helena Paparizou. She will have competition from 1993 entrant Katy Garbi. Peggy Zina, Eleonora Zouganeli and Natasa Theodoridou complete the category. No Eurovision entrants made it onto the Best Male Artist ‘Adult’ list.

We see a different story with the Best Male Artist ‘Modern’ category. Sakis Rouvas, who represented Greece in both 2004 and 2009, plus hosted the 2006 contest, is among the nominees. Perhaps more surprising to Eurovision fans is the fact that Michalis Hatizgiannis is also on the list. He represented Cyprus back in 1998 with “Genesis”, but has had a highly successful career ever since.

The Best Female Artist ‘Modern’ category is filled to the brim with Eurovision stars. Four out of five acts have stepped on the Eurovision stage before: Tamta, Stefania, Ivi Adamou and Eleni Foureira. The fifth nominee is Josephine. Potential 2022 entrant good job nicky is on the list as Game Changer.

Best song awards on the horizon

Spread out over the categories, we see most of these acts being nominated for best songs as well. Helena Paparizou is on the list to win Best Ballad with her single “Gia Pia Agapi”. Ivi Adamou gets three more nominations for her collab with Stavento on “Gia Sena”. They could win Best Duet/Collab, Best Video and Song of the Year.

She will have to fight Eleni Foureira, though. She also received nominations for Best Duet/Collab and Best Video on “Borei” with Mad Clip. Furthermore, “Aeraki (To Thiliko)” is in the running to win Best Video or Best Pop Song.

Both Katy Garbi and Michalis Hatzigiannis are in with a shot of winning Song of the Year as well. For Hatzigiannis, the song on the list of nominees is “Kanenas Monos”. Garbi’s entry is her duet with Dionysis Schoinas, titled “Atofio Chrysafi”.

The MAD VMAs

The MAD Video Music Awards have taken place every year since 2004. For the past few years, the Greek organisers have been inviting Eurovision stars to perform as well. In Athens, they then perform together with a local singer in a duet version of their Eurovision songs. Previous duos have been Mikolas Josef and TamtaLuca Hänni and Vangelis KakouriotisPoli Genova and Demy and Helena Paparizou and Sergey Lazarev.

For the 2022 edition, a recent report states that Eleni Foureira and Chanel will bring the Spanish and Greek fans what they’ve been craving. Looking at the history of the MAD VMAs, it seems logical that the duo will perform “SloMo” together.

The 2022 MAD Video Music Awards will take place at the Faliro Sports Pavilion Arena in Athens on 22nd June. MAD TV will broadcast the show live on Greek television. You can vote for your favourites in all categories here.
