Azerbaijan confirms Eurovision 2023 participation

This comes weeks after speculation that they would be withdrawing.

Back in September, rumours began to emerge that Azerbaijan would not be broadcasting Eurovision 2023, meaning that they would be withdrawing from the contest. However, Ictimai’s deputy Chief of Staff dismissed these rumours shortly after.

Last week, the broadcaster confirmed to ESCToday that they will be participating in the 2023 Eurovision Song Contest, despite initial speculation that they would be withdrawing.

Ictimai has yet to confirm how it will select its representative for Liverpool. However, they have used an internal selection for both their artist and song since 2015.

Azerbaijan in the Eurovision Song Contest 2022

2023 will mark the 15th time that Azerbaijan has competed in the Eurovision Song Contest since their debut in 2008. They have won the contest on one occasion – back in 2011 with Ell & Nikki’s “Running Scared”.

Azerbaijan finished 16th in the Grand Final with 106 points. Their dark ballad “Fade To Black”, performed by Nadir Rustamli, was a big hit with the juries, scoring 103 points. It received only 3 points from the public. Furthermore this was the only song to ever qualify for a final without scoring a single point in the televote in the semi final.
