Today, Ukraine selected their Eurovision 2024 entry at an unusual edition of Vidbir. The winners are alyona alyona & Jerry Heil with their song “Teresa & Maria”!
Eleven acts participated in this year’s edition of Vidbir: ten acts were chosen by a professional jury, and one finalist – ANKA – was added in a wild-card round, decided by public votes.
Vidbir 2024 was an exciting show, hosted by Julia Sanina, Timur Miroshnychenko and Vasyl Baidak, and featuring guest performances by many familiar faces: Ruslana, Tvorchi, Kalush Orchestra, Jamala, Verka Serduchka, Tina Karol and Junior Eurovision’s Anastasia Dymyd with Svitlana Tarabarova, several of whom were accompanied by an orchestra. The three-member jury for Vidbir was selected via an online vote and consisted of Andrii Danylko (Verka Serduchka), Jamala and Sergii Tanchynets – their votes accounted for 50% of the final results, the other half being decided by the public votes. The show was broadcast in English (in addition to Ukrainian) for the first time.
While the show was fantastically done, it will mostly be remembered by the voting app not working. The show was pre-recorded on Friday, and the results were to be presented live on Saturday evening from a different location. Unfortunately, once the programme cut to the live announcement of the results, it was announced that Diia, the app used for voting, was not working properly due to extreme demand and the public votes could not be registered. After roughly an hour, it was decided that the voting would be postponed until Sunday 4 February. Following all the voting chaos, SKYLERR announced her withdrawal from the competition. However, according to broadcaster Suspilne, withdrawing is not possible at this stage; if SKYLERR had won, she would have been able to refuse participation in Eurovision instead. A rerun of the show aired at 15:15 EET (14:15 CET) on Sunday afternoon, and the voting lines closed once all performances were shown. Immediately after, starting at 19:05 EET (18:05 CET), the results could finally be announced. In this second (and effectively working) voting window, over a million Ukrainians voted for their favourite song!
