After a nearly decade-long absence, San Marino is stepping back onto the Junior Eurovision stage for the 2024 contest in Madrid. The microstate has selected the girl group Idols SM to represent the country, marking an exciting return after last competing in 2015.
Who are Idols SM?
The group, made up of four talented young singers—Asia Ceccoli, Giulia Rinaldi, Giorgia Descisolo, and Vera Stefania Olkhovskaya—was revealed during the “Sogna Ragazzo Sogna” event, a fundraising initiative in San Marino supporting pediatric cancer research.
RTV, San Marino’s national broadcaster, opted for an internal selection this year, focusing on showcasing local talent. The decision to send Idols SM highlights San Marino’s commitment to nurturing young artists from within its borders.
The Song Selection
During the event, two potential songs—Poesia and Come Noi—were performed for the audience. A jury then chose Come Noi as the song that will represent San Marino in Junior Eurovision 2024. The track is yet to be officially released but is expected to drop soon, adding to the anticipation.
A Welcome Return
San Marino’s return to the Junior Eurovision Song Contest comes nine years after its last appearance, where Kamilla Ismailova represented the nation with “Mirror,” finishing 14th with 36 points. The country has previously participated in the contest in 2013 and 2014, with Michele Perniola (“O-o-O Sole intorno a me”) placing 10th and The Peppermints (“Breaking My Heart”) placing 15th. The renewed participation signals a fresh chapter for San Marino, particularly as it continues to invest in young, homegrown talent.
Junior Eurovision 2024
This year’s Junior Eurovision, the 22nd edition, will take place in Madrid, Spain, on November 16, 2024. Seventeen countries are confirmed for the event, which follows Spain’s second-place finish in 2023 and France’s decision to pass on hosting duties.
