Germany, alongside Belgium and the United Kingdom, did not receive any points from the public vote during the Eurovision 2026 Grand Final. In this article, we dive behind the numbers to see whether Germany was close to enter a public’s top 10, and how it fared in average rankings.
Ups and down with the public vote
Contrary to the United Kingdom and Belgium, Germany was not at the very bottom of the grand majority of countries’ televotes, and ended up being more divisive.
- Germany was ranked, on average, at 20.8 which is the highest rank of the three nil-pointers (20.9 if you discount San Marino’s fake vote)
- However, a whopping ten countries ranked it last, as many as Belgium and the United Kingdom put together. These were Australia, Czechia, Estonia, Finland, Georgia, Latvia, Lithuania, Montenegro, Sweden, and the Rest of the World voting.
- But “Fire” was a divisive entry for public votes accross Europe:
- “Only” 18 countries ranked it in their bottom 3, and 24 in their bottom 5 (compared to 31 and 32 for the UK and Belgium respectively)
- Germany came 11th in Luxembourg, just one spot away from 10th, which would have earned it one televote point. It also came 13th in Switzerland and Austria, two other German-speaking nations (with Sarah Engels having some strong following in Austria), and 15th in Israel and Italy
- As such, the standard derivation of its ranks from the rest of Europe was the highest of the three nil-pointers, at 3.83
In our Eurovision context, this statistical tool puts a figure on how spread-out the rankings of Germany from different countries were: the lower the figure, the less variation there is. At 3.83, Germany ranks as the 16th most divisive entry, so nothing too extreme, but much higher than the UK (2.10, 23rd most divisive or more simply “3rd least divisive” entry) and Belgium (1.58, least divisive entry in the Final, for the audience).
