As deadline day for the host bidding of the Eurovision Song Contest 2026 rapidly approaches, Oberwart becomes the latest to announce the withdrawal of their interest.
Municipality of Oberwart declares bid to host Eurovision 2026 is over
After JJ’s victory in the Eurovision Song Contest 2025, numerous Austrian cities declared their interest to be the host city for the Eurovision Song Contest 2026. Back in May, the Mayor of Oberwart stated the municipality is available and has the requirements to host the contest. The proposed venue was the Burgenland Hall Exhibition Centre scheduled for completion in March 2026.
However, a spokesperson for Oberwart has now confirmed to local media that the municipality has withdrawn its proposal. The venue capacity of 4000 falls far below the 10,000 minimum requirement set by the EBU. Despite this setback, Oberwart is still looking at options to provide support events to the winning bidder, such as hosting a mass viewing party or local song contest.
