Linz and Wels withdraw from Eurovision 2026 bidding process

As deadline day for the host bidding of the Eurovision Song Contest 2026 rapidly approaches, Linz and Wels become the latest to announce the withdrawal of their interest.

Linz and Wels withdraw joint bid to host Eurovision 2026

Back in May, Linz and Wels proposed a joint venture to host Eurovision 2026. It was intended for Linz to provide the accompanying side events to Eurovision, while Wels would welcome fans to its venue for the shows.

Due to concerns over the costs of hosting Eurovision and doubts surrounding the venue, the two cities have agreed to withdraw their joint bid. Among the issues with the proposed venue were the ceiling heights, suspended squares and stage conditions. At present, only one location in Austria meets the full requirements needed for a host venue.

“We started this project with great conviction because we believe in the power of cooperation and the cultural potential of our region. With its diverse offer, its hospitality and a strong team, Linz could have contributed a great deal. Of course, it is a pity that we did not pursue this path – we would have been very pleased to welcome such a big, connecting event, at least in part in Linz. Even if it is not enough to apply this time, the intensive cooperation with Wels shows what is possible in Upper Austria when cities work together. It is a pity that it cannot come about, but it is an informed decision based on clear facts.”

“Wels would have been willing and able to cope with the partners. Personally, I would have liked it if a major event were to take place outside Vienna. However, the complex technical requirements for the hall structures were not yet feasible. The expected costs were also significantly higher than the estimated budget. In any case, we will continue to try to achieve international events in the new exhibition halls – looking for cooperation opportunities with the city of Linz has proven itself.”
