Fresh from her runner-up placing in this year’s Melodifestivalen, Dotter released her new single “Backfire” last week. Now, following a teaser clip, she has dropped the official video for the track.
A banger for your summer playlist
New single ‘Backfire’ is the latest track from Swedish sensation Dotter. She has turned up the tempo from ‘Bulletproof‘ and pivoted slightly from her usual indie pop sound. The track was written and produced alongside long-term collaborator Dino Medanhodzic.
“Backfire” is about bad karma, if you do something bad, then you hit it back on yourself. In this case, it’s not about taking action when someone else is trying to push one down. The song is about being strong and showing oneself love and respect, daring to put one’s best first in order to avoid being depressed by people who want a bad one.
Dotter speaking about the single
The video features plenty of tulle, choreography and enough strobes and lighting changes to *almost* make up for the cancellation of Eurovision 2020. Dotter co-directed the video alongside Keisha Von Arnold and Kristoffer Jansson.
Dotter in Melodifestivalen
Back in 2017, Dotter (born JohannaMaria Jansson) made her Melodifestivalen debut…as a songwriter. She co-wrote Mariette’s third participating entry and finalist ‘A Million Years‘. The following year, Dotter returned to make her debut as a solo artist in her own right. Despite ‘Cry’ being a fan favourite, the dark pop ballad was eliminated in sixth place in the semi-finals.
Last year, Dotter returned as a songwriting and came back in the form of Lina Hedlund’s ‘Victorious‘. The song came a respectable 11th place in the final. This year, she got her true redemption, with ‘Bulletproof’ going direct to the final alongside Anna Bergendahl. Tipped to win by bookies and many fans, ‘Bulletproof’ only missed out on victory by one point to ‘Move’ by The Mamas. This was the closest winning margin in Melodifestivalen since 2014.
