🇮🇹 Rome throws its hat in the ring for Eurovision 2022

PalaLottomatica located in the EUR district proposed venue

Rome wants to host the Eurovision Song Contest 2022. Virginia Raggi, the mayor, confirmed their interest on social media. The capital city of Italy becomes the sixth city in a day to express their interest in hosting the first ever Eurovision on Italian soil since 1991. Check out our map of host city options for Italy below!

Back to Rome?

Back in 1991, the contest also took place in Rome. At that point, Sanremo was supposed to host the contest in the legendary Teatro Ariston. However, due to the invasion of Kuwait by Iraq and international tension, RAI decided to move the contest to Rome in January. The Cinecittà played host for an iconic contest. To date, 1991 is the last contest predominantly not hosted in English or French, as Gigliola Cinquetti and Toto Cutugno decided to stick to Italian.

Maybe we should all return to the Eternal City thirty-one years later. Virginia Raggi, mayor of the city, confirmed her interest in bringing the contest to Rome. She sees the city as the perfect location for the Eurovision Song Contest. They also have a suitable venue with the PalaLottomatica. The arena is located in the EUR district, a well-known business area of Rome. The EUR district is about 10 kilometres away from the city centre of Rome, so the PalaLottomatica not in walking distance from the landmarks like the Colosseum or the Vatican.
