Back in May, Norwegian broadcaster NRK confirmed that they will take part in Eurovision 2022, as submissions opened for next year’s Melodi Grand Prix. Originally, song submissions were due to close on 15th August, however, the deadline has been extended by a month.
Interested songwriters can submit their entries via NRK’s online platform. Melodi Grand Prix 2022 will begin in January with semi-finals being held, leading up to the Grand Final in February. The deadline for submissions is now September 15.
Submissions (still) open to all
When submissions opened, NRK released the rules of Melodi Grand Prix 2022, which outline that songwriters can submit up to three potential entries. Artists for each song will be selected by NRK along with the participating songwriter.
The rules encourage that each entry has at least one Norwegian songwriter to help promote Norwegian music. However, this is not a requirement and submissions are open to songwriters from across the world. NRK will also directly invite composers and artists to participate in Melodi Grand Prix.
As per the Eurovision rules, all artists must be at least 16 years old in May 2022 and songs must be shortened to a maximum of 3 minutes if they are selected to take part in the national final. A jury will select the entries for Melodi Grand Prix in November 2021 and songwriters will be notified of the decision in due course.
Norway at Eurovision 2021
After five semi-finals, a wildcard round a twelve-entry final, TIX became victorious in the 2021 edition of Melodi Grand Prix earlier this year. In the ‘Gold Duel’, TIX received nearly 100,000 more votes than runners-up KEiiNO with their song “Monument”.
TIX went onto represent Norway at Eurovision 2021 in Rotterdam, qualifying from the semi-final in 10th place. In the final, TIX finished in 18th place scoring 75 points. Norway received their highest points from Denmark – a total of 11 (8 televoting points, 3 jury points).
