GPB, the Georgian national broadcaster, has confirmed their participation for the 2022 Eurovision Song Contest. They have yet to confirm their method of artist selection, having used Georgian Idol to select their past two entrants.
GPB has confirmed to ESCToday that Georgia will be participating at Eurovision 2022, due to be hosted in Italy. The method of selection has not yet been decided, but the broadcaster are planning on announcing this information in the coming months.
Previously, Georgia have used both national finals and internal selections to select their entries. In 2019 and 2020, the Georgian entrant was selected through Georgian Idol, but the past two songs have been selected internally.
Georgia at Eurovision 2021
Last year, Tornike Kipiani won Georgian Idol and got the right to represent Georgia at the 2020 Eurovision Song Contest. His entry for the 2020 contest would have been “Take Me As I Am”. However, as the contest was cancelled, he was re-selected to represent Georgia in this year’s contest internally.
Back in March, the self-penned “You” was revealed as his entry for the 2021 contest. In Rotterdam, Tornike finished 16th in the second semi-final with 16 points. This marked Georgia’s fourth consecutive non-qualification, with their most recent qualification being back in 2016 with Nika Kocharov & Young Georgian Lolitaz.
