Supernova 2022 final to take place on 12th February

The selection will kick off on 5th February with a semi-final

Latvia is set to choose their entry for Eurovision 2022 on 12th February, as the country prepares for the Supernova selection. The semi-final will take place on the 5th February, with the final being held a week later. 130 songs have been submitted to Latvian broadcaster LTV for the selection.

The Supernova selection is set to return after a hiatus last year following the internal selection of Samanta Tīna. LTV have not officially confirmed the details of the selection yet. The news of the selection date was revealed via the Eurovision.tv calendar. It is not yet known how many of the 130 songs will be taken forward to the selection. Though, it is expected that between 16 and 24 acts will compete.

Back in October, LTV opened the submissions window for Supernova 2022. According to the rules, foreign songwriters could compete if they contributed one-third or less of the song. A record number of submissions were sent to LTV.

On December 7, the application for the Latvian Television Song Contest “Supernova 2022” ended. The previous record number of applications has been broken – 130 songs have been submitted this year!

A jury formed of representatives of the main radio stations in Latvia will now assess the songs in a blind process (the artist will not be given).

Latvia at Eurovision 2021

Samanta Tina, a veteran of Supernova, finally got her chance to go to Eurovision last year when she won the selection with “Still Breathing”. However, with the cancellation of the contest, it turned out to not be her year after all. Thankfully, LTV internally selected her for the 2021 contest and began the search for her 2021 entry last summer.

Samanta and her team wrote 11 potential entries during her songwriting camp. In the process she consulted former Latvian Eurovision representatives Aminata (2015) and Kārlis Būmeistars (Valters & Kaža, 2005).” She released her Eurovision 2021 entry “The Moon Is Rising” back in March, as part of a series of special programming from LTVThe video went on to attract controversy from conservatives in Latvia.

Unfortunately, the song failed to qualify from its semi-final in Rotterdam, placing 17th with 14 points.

I'm the youngest member of the team here at ESCXTRA but that doesn't mean I know the least about the contest. You'll usually find me enjoying a Eurovision classic, while discovering new facts about Eurovision history. When I'm not doing that, I'll be somewhere on a dancefloor... still thinking about music!
