Rehearsal review
Stage presentation
The staging is one of the most intricate we’ve seen. The shell prop is absolutely HUGE and comes on stage in two halves. The entire prop is covered with projections throughout, with flashing lights emanating from the back wall.
This performance also utilises the waterfall as part of the opening shot, which is incredibly impactful. My one major complaint is the overuse of wide shots, and the choice of camera cuts in general diminish some of the effects and don’t do justice to the choreography, but the camera work definitely improved as the rehearsals progressed.
Costumes and styling
Andromache is wearing a gorgeous sparkly camel body suit, which has a slit down the leg. Her hair is mermaid style, crimped with a slight wet look to it. It’s all very cohesive.
Vocal quality
There were mic issues for the first 2.5 runs, and Andromache was very low in the mix. Thankfully, she is a total professional and by the final run, the mixing and vocal were perfect.
Overall impression
This is incredibly impressive and impactful on the stage, in a year where some of the staging concepts have fallen flat. The best parts of this are the first 30 seconds and the last 30 seconds, which are the crucial to making an impression with viewers.
I just hope they are able to tidy up the camerawork by the time the dress rehearsals roll around.
