As deadline day for the host bidding of the Eurovision Song Contest 2026 rapidly approaches, Graz becomes the latest to announce the withdrawal of their interest.
Mayor of Graz announces city will not bid to host Eurovision 2026
After JJ’s victory in the Eurovision Song Contest 2025, numerous Austrian cities declared their interest to be the host city for the Eurovision Song Contest 2026. Back in May, local politicians discussed the viability of a Graz bid. At the time, the Mayor of Graz openly declared his view that the city has the facilities and expertise to deliver the contest to Graz. The proposed venue was the 11,000 capacity Stadthalle.
Despite attempts to win over local investors, sponsors and government departments, the city of Graz has confirmed it will not submit a bid to host Eurovision 2026. The level of funding needed proved too challenging for Austria’s second city to consider.
“In light of the tense financial situation of the city, which also required a budget freeze, it was clear from the outset that an application can only be made if the costs for Graz remain within a reasonable framework. This would have required substantial contribution by the state and the federal government. Numerous talks were held at all levels, but they did not lead to any binding commitments.
The costs would amount to EUR 29.35 million (gross) after extensive and detailed examination. This value is surprising, since it is far above the (inflation-adjusted) figure from 2014, when Graz applied to host ESC 2015. This is due to the significantly increased requirements, which are reflected in a correspondingly long list.
An application within the now known budget is not justifiable for Graz, as much as I understand all those who would have liked the contest to be held in our city.”
Elke Kahr, (Mayor of Graz)
