Staging The performance begins in darkness, with Cesár’s face visible at 15 seconds in. Wearing a head mic, he emerges on top of a gigantic podium raised metres into the air. There are gold lights from underneath the stage and around the podium, and Cesár is lit by white spotlights from above. The podium descends during the second verse in which there are closer shots of Cesár who interacts well with the camera. As we move into the chorus, the hologram of Cesár …

The latest artist to rehearse for the second time is Franka for Croatia. We have just watched their latest run through of Crazy live on screen and here is our initial reaction. Staging As expected, the already very effective staging has not been changed! We begin with a close shot of Franka, with dramatic flashing lighting used as the beat comes in. Already there is lots of smoke used creating a mysterious feel to the stage. Eurovision fans will immediately make comparisons to the last couple of Armenian entries, with Franka using lots of arm choreography and fast camera cuts for the “love love love” hook. From the second verse, Franka moves …

Staging The performance begins with Marija’s hand towards the camera and a flickery transition reveals her standing with Bojan… a pre-recorded beginning! She’s centre stage, with Bojan and the drummer to stage left and the three backing vocalists stage right. During the chorus, Marija goes over to her backing vocalists to perform some synchronised choreography. In general, there is lots of movement throughout the performance, with Marija taking turns to interact with the camera, with Bojan and with her backing …

The latest artist to rehearse for the second time is Equinox for Bulgaria. We have just watched their latest run through of Bones live on screen and here is our initial reaction. Staging This looks very similar to Equinox’s first rehearsal: Bulgaria have reused their Kristian Kostov camera shakes in the first verse of Bulgaria. Each vocalist gets their moment in the main frame, overlaying camera shots are used to combine vocalists into ‘one’ and strobe lighting is also used. A perspex box is used as the prop for Bulgaria, with the vocalists arranged in a line. Several different visual effects are used and there’s a very powerful wind machine almost blowing …

The latest artist to rehearse for the second time is Elina Nechayeva for Estonia. We have just watched their latest run through of La Forza live on screen and here is our initial reaction. Staging There are subtle camerawork changes for Estonia’s second rehearsal. The beginning of Elina’s performance begins using a wide shot of the stage but with only her upper body lit. The camera then switches to a close up of Elina’s face, which moves sideways to give the effect of Elina gliding across the screen. The dress is then revealed with its projections during the first chorus. Throughout the performance, camera shots are cropped closer to Elina’s dress on stage which maximises …

The latest artist to rehearse for the second time is Netta for Israel. We have just watched their latest run through of Toy live on screen and here is our initial reaction. Staging Israel’s staging is the exact same as their first rehearsal… There’s a LOT of maneki-nekos…you know those waving gold cats in Chinese takeaways? Those. Netta’s stood behind her looper, but now it’s all lit up, and the gold and white combination looks incredible. She’s using the looper a lot throughout the performance and it looks so creative. Near the end of the song, she goes to the catwalk and dances with the dancers. It. Looks. Amazing. The camera angles …

Staging There are a few subtle changes in this second rehearsal for Ieva. There are a lot more camera close-ups for Ieva throughout the performance. Ieva has a sensational level of camera connection, singing right to those watching at home. The holograms are also much improved, which are mostly transparent and only flash up for a second each. At the beginning of the performance, the camera begins behind Ieva who sits on stage looking out to the audience. There is …

The latest artist to rehearse for the second time is Mikolas Josef for Czech Republic. We have just watched their latest run through of Lie To Me live on screen and here is our initial reaction. Staging For the most part, the performance is completely the same… Two breakdancers against light-up screens, Mikolas starting on a small staircase, lots of blue and pink, looks good! Mikolas is having fun but it’s obvious that he’s reserving his energy for the live performance, in fact, he barely even moves, probably due to his injury. About halfway through, the dancers join Mikolas on the staircase and they do some pretty cool dancing together, although again …
