We are counting down the days until the Junior Eurovision Song Contest of 2020. Despite the fact that nobody will be able to attend the contest in real this year, ESCXTRA still managed to speak with some of the candidates. In this article, you will meet Chanel who represents Malta this year.

We would like to thank Chanel and the Maltese delegation for allowing us to undertake this interview.

Chanel Monseigneur’s road to Junior Eurovision 2020

Chanel may be only 9 years old, but this girl knows what she wants. With the help of her father, she took her first steps in the music world. He recorded a video in which Chanel could be heard singing and sent it to a singing teacher. Chanel clearly loves challenges as she already competed in several music competitions in and outside Malta, and there are still lots of them on her bucket list. In the future she hopes to participate in The Voice Kids, Britain’s Got Talent, New Wave in Russia and even the adult Eurovision Song Contest. But now it is time for the Junior Eurovision Song Contest. Chanel signed up for the Maltese national final and won! She gets the honour to represent her country with “Chasing Sunsets”.

Malta at the Junior Eurovision Song Contest

Apart from 2011 and 2012, malta has participated in every edition since the start of the contest. Sarah Harisson got the honour to represent Malta in their debut year 2003, she did that with “Lik A Star” and finished 7th.

The first part of their JESC journey mainly ended up in rather average results. After the little break they took in 2011 and 2012, they came back way stronger! In 2013, Malta finally managed to win thanks to Gaia Cauchi. Two years later, a second win for the small island arrived. In 2015, it was Destiny’s turn to bring the trophy to her home country. Last year, Malta unfortunately finished last in the contest. Eliana Gomez Blanco sang “We Are More” and received a total of 29 points.
