Italy at the Eurovision Song Contest
Italy is one of the founding participants of the Eurovision Song Contest, taking part in the first-ever edition in 1956. The country is also responsible for the current Eurovision format, as it was based on the popular Festival di Sanremo which began in 1951.
Italy has won the Eurovision Song Contest twice. In 1964, Gigliola Cinquetti won with Non Ho L’età and took the contest to Naples next year.
In 1990, Toto Cutugno won the Eurovision Song Contest with Insieme: 1992 and the contest headed to Rome the following year. The 2 Italian winners, Toto Cutugno and Gigliola Cinquetti took on the role of presenting.
Italy returned to the contest in 2011 and has since finished in the top three on three occasions – 2nd in 2011, 3rd in 2015 and 2nd in 2019. Diodato was selected to represent Italy in 2020 with “Fai rumore” before the contest cancellation.
