The radio station YleX has released the nominees as the breakthrough artist of 2021 in Finland. Among the names is Aksel Kankaanranta, who was chosen to represent the country in Eurovision Song Contest 2020.
Aksel Kankaanranta won Uuden Musiikin Kilpailu 2020 with his song “Looking Back” and was set to represent Finland at the Eurovision Song Contest 2020 in Rotterdam. He told in an interview with Voice.fi that he didn’t submit a song to UMK21, although he does fit some of the clues given by the broadcaster Yle about the 2021 artists.
Last year Aksel released his first single in Finnish “Muista kuka oot”. Currently he has two record deals, one for his music in English and another for the music in Finnish.
The nominees also include duo Lili & Luna that includes Leena Tirronen, who represented Finland at the Eurovision Song Contest 2017 as part of Norma John. The duo has released two singles, their latest song “Lopputekstit” was released last November.
A panel of music experts will choose the winner but public also has a chance to vote for their favourite. The winners of both votes will be revealed later this month.
