According to the Scandipop 2021 Awards, Tess Merkel is “The One To Watch For.” Eurovision fans most likely recognize the Swedish singer as a former member of Alcazar, but this Melodifestivalen she is going solo! Our editor Bente had the opportunity to chat with Tess Merkel about all things music, Melodifestivalen, and Alcazar. Check it out here:
Solo for the first time
The Swedish band Alcazar has become a household name in Melodifestivalen. They have participated 5 times in the Swedish National Final, albeit never getting the opportunity to represent their country at the Eurovision Song Contest. This year, several Alcazar members have opted to provide a solo performance.
For some of them, this wasn’t the first time, as Andreas Lundstedt, Lina Hedlund, and Magnus Carlsson already performed solo before. However, Tess Merkel is going solo for the first time this year, and she is hoping to win over hearts with her uplifting entry ‘Good Life’.
Alcazar, but make it more personal
In the interview with ESCXTRA, Tess Merkel shared that Alcazar fans will certainly recognize the music that she is known for. However, she has given it a personal touch, to make it seem more like a performance that belongs just to her. Teasing the song, she said that it is uplifting, fun, and overall hoping to inspire people during these difficult times. Plus, she is working with the choreographer who also worked with previous winners like John Lundvik and The Mamas!
Tess has confirmed that while winning would be great, it is not her main goal of joining this competition. “If I do well for myself, I have already won. It doesn’t matter if I make it to the final, I will have won.” With a positive attitude like that, Tess will certainly take the message of ‘Good Life’ to another level on the Melodifestivalen stage!
