🇳🇱 Duncan Laurence performs “Arcade” on ‘The Today Show’ in U.S. television debut

Everyone who watches the Eurovision Song Contest has been familiar with Duncan Laurence’s song “Arcade” since its victory in Tel Aviv in 2019. However, almost 2 years after its original release, the media in the United States has shown an increased interest in the singer from The Netherlands. This morning, he made his debut on U.S. television when he performed his winning song on ‘Today 3rd Hour’, a segment of the popular morning show ‘The Today Show’.

Popularity on social media

The segment starts with a quick interview, where viewers can learn that Duncan has won Eurovision with “Arcade”, and how he has dealt with bullying through music when he was younger. Furthermore, the hosts emphasize that, as the song states, Duncan is a “small town boy”. Yet, he has now achieved global success with his song and reached an international market beyond Eurovision: what has caused this sudden spark of success for “Arcade”?

Social media app TikTok is one of the main reasons for this interest from the United States. On this app, people make videos of themselves with a song playing in the background, and “Arcade” is one of the most popular songs on the app at the moment. With the song going viral, Duncan has gained tremendous support from all over the world: “Arcade” has become the most streamed Eurovision song of all time, and he had entered the UK official top 40!

“Arcade” is not the only Eurovision song that has gone viral on TikTok, other viral hits include Netta’s “Toy” and Daði & Gagnamagnið’s “Think About Things”!
