Turin 2022🇳🇱 Netherlands

🇳🇱 Maan “a serious candidate” to represent the Netherlands at Eurovision 2022?

2018 was "too early", but will 2022 be her year?

Back in 2017, the Voice of Holland 2015 winner Maan was rumoured to represent the Netherlands at Eurovision 2018 in Lisbon. However, in response, she commented that it was “too early” in her career. Now, according to aspiring Eurovision representative Dries Roelvink, she is a “serious candidate” for Eurovision 2022.

Of course, many Eurovision fans are aware of the strong connection between the Voice of Holland and the contest. The fact that the eventual 2018 entrant, Waylon, is a coach on the show kinda says it all. Eurovision 2019 winner Duncan Laurence is another notable example, having been coached by Ilse DeLange on the show back in 2014.

In an interview with Telegraaf, Dries Roelvink claims that Maan is ‘a serious candidate’. Maan de Steenwinkel won the sixth season of the Voice of Holland and has gone on to have a successful career in music and TV, even working with Eurovision alum Anouk in the studio. Last year, she released her latest album Onverstaanbaar.

I’ve heard in the corridors that Maan is a serious candidate. Well, if it were her, then I’m at peace with it. A beautiful young singer.

It’s worth noting that Dries is publicly pursuing the candidacy and is already putting together a prospective entry for the contest. He also spent much of the interview disparaging Jeangu Macrooy’s entry, so whether or not he is a reliable source for AVROTROS’ intentions is debatable.

Another frontrunner to represent the Netherlands was Davina Michelle, who said she would decline the offer for 2022. However, in the past, both O’G3NE and Douwe Bob had denied rumours of their selection before the official announcement, so both Davina and Maan are worth keeping an eye on. Superstar DJ and 2021 interval performer Afrojack has also expressed interest in working on the Dutch entry.

The Netherlands at Eurovision 2021

Back in 2020, the Dutch broadcasters AVROTROS and NPO selected Jeangu Macrooy internally with the song “Grow”. Despite the cancellation of the 2020 contest due to the pandemic, Jeangu was the first re-selection to be confirmed. In fact, AVROTROS confirmed the invitation the day the cancellation was announced.

Back in March, Jeangu presented “Birth Of A New Age”, which featured lyrics in Sranan Tongo, the language of Suriname. In the Grand Final, he finished in 23rd place with eleven points, all from the juries. Soon after, AVROTROS confirmed their participation for the 2022 contest, announcing that they want a ‘nearly finished product’ for their entry next year.
