Loreen, best known for winning Eurovision 2012 with the highly-acclaimed “Euphoria”, is making a comeback to the competition, according to Swedish newspaper Aftonbladet. This comes ahead of the official announcement of participating artists.
Melodifestivalen, the competition which chooses the Swedish entry for Eurovision, is one of the biggest events in the Swedish television calendar. And one of its most famous winners is the artist who brought Sweden their 5th (out of 6) Eurovision victories, Loreen. Aftonbladet is reporting that Loreen will return to Eurovision and she is doing it with the same songwriters who wrote her winning song “Euphoria”. These are Peter Boström and Thomas G:son. Also involved is Jimmy “Joker” “Thörnfeldt, who wrote Tusse’s “Voices”. This represents a potentially dream combination, and according to this Aftonbladet article, Loreen herself is very positive about the song.
This information has been provided by Aftonbladet, so Loreen’s participation hasn’t been officially announced, but they claim that several sources are providing this information. The final announcement may not come before the SVT press conference revealing this year’s artists, expected to be in late November.
Loreen in Melodifestivalen
Loreen has to date entered Melodifestivalen 3 times. Her first attempt, with “My Heart Is Refusing Me” in 2011, got her to the Second Chance round. This raised her profile for the follow-up next year, and she won the Melodifestivalen competition, and subsequently Eurovision with 2012’s “Euphoria”.
A return in 2017 proved comparatively disappointing though, as her song “Statements” made it as far as the Second Chance round again. This has, according to Aftonbladet, made Loreen hesitant to enter the competition again, but she has now been persuaded to return to the stage in 2023.
