BREAKING NEWS: 🇲🇩 Moldova withdraws from Eurovision 2025

After holding auditions for its national selection, Moldovan broadcaster TRM has announced its withdrawal from Eurovision 2025, meaning Moldova will not take part in the next contest.

Not an easy decision

The announcement came in a press conference this morning, held by Moldova1 Director Corneliu Durnescu, and the Moldovan Head of Delegation, Daniela Crudu.

The decision was not an easy one, but it was necessary in the current context. This year’s national selection highlighted certain challenges, including a decrease in the public interest and the overall quality of artistic plays and performances. This has generated a negative perception among specialists and the public, stressing the need for a substantial reform in the selection process.

The TRM team considered economic, administrative and artistic “challenges” before taking their decision. The “artistic” part was driven by the opinions of a panel of music experts, in addition to the jury used during the auditions for Etapa Nationala, the planned national selection.

We consulted music specialists, and most of them expressed serious reservations about Moldova’s participation this year, in agreement with the opinion of the jury that TRM selected for this edition. We respect the opinions of professionals and of the general public, and we understand that we have to make responsible decisions

The economic and financial aspects included the organisation of the national selection, and the budget for Eurovision in itself, which include production costs, transportation to and accommodations in the host city, etc, as well as the participation fee. TRM revealed that their participation fee represented 21,486€, quelling rumours in Moldova about a cost closer to 200,000€.

Eurovision will still be broadcast – as Moldova prepares for a comeback

Despite this withdrawal, Moldova will still broadcast the 2025 contest in full in May, with both semi-finals and the Grand final being scheduled for a live broadcast on Moldova1.

The press conference was also the occasion for TRM to insist on the fact that the withdrawal was not meant to be “definitive”. Moldova intends to use this break of at least one year to better prepare for upcoming editions. TRM “aims to revise the selection criteria and methodology, to encourage wider participation of talented artists and to provide a more consistent and competitive cultural representation on the international stage.”

This decision was not an easy one, but we assure you that it was analysed in detail. We know that we all wanted to organise a national final and to build the act that would represent us on the international stage. However, we are firmly convinced that this decision will boost participation in future editions. We will make sure that we will return in force to Eurovision. It is important to support people who want to get on big stages and give them the opportunity to prepare better.

Daniela Crudu, Head of Delegation for Moldova at Eurovision

This marks the first withdrawal ever from Moldova, which first competed in 2005 and has been present every year since, having qualified 13 times ouf of 19 participations.

Are you surprised by this decision? Was the lineup of the auditions of a lower level, according to you? Do you expect Moldova to come back stronger in 2026 or beyond? Tell us more in the comments below or on social media!
