Australia will select internally for Eurovision 2025

Eager Eurovision fans in Australia and Europe have the news they have been waiting for. SBS has announced today that Australia’s next Eurovision representative who will take to the stage in Basel this May, will be internally selected. Thus, ending speculation of a rebirth for the national final format used previously. In 2019, 2020, and 2022 the popular, Australia Decides at the Gold Coast Convention Centre was a focal point of SBS’ Eurovision programming. However, SBS have tended to favour an internal selection in most years of Australia’s participation in the Eurovision Song Contest.

Choosing to remain tight-lipped for now, the broadcaster has only confirmed that the artist and entry will be revealed before the EBU deadline in March. In an interesting move, SBS has also revealed that future Eurovision hopefuls can email [email protected] with entries for the 2026 contest. Signalling their intent to participate in Eurovision 2026. Typically SBS do not put open calls out for candidates.

A 10-year-anniversary for Australia at Eurovision

Australia first took part in the contest almost ten years ago, in 2015, in Vienna. For their eleventh participation (including the 2020 cancellation), the country Down Under will be back in German-speaking lands.

First invited as a special “Down under” interval act in 2014, with Jessica Mauboy singing “Sea of Flags” during the second semi-final, the country was then invited to take part in the 2015 contest, qualifying directly to the final, making it the only Grand Final with 27 acts taking part.

Starting in 2016, Australia became a regular participant, going through the semi-finals. The country qualified six times out of their eight participations, only missing out on the final in 2021 and this year, in 2024, when Electric Fields came 11th in the first semi-final.
